Sustainable cities in India| 23.01.2012 Since the early 1990s, India has faced an incredible transport demand rise. Transport supply that grows slower than the rising demand has created many challenges such as road congestion and low capacity and quality of public transport. To address these challenges, Sustainable Urban Transport Project (SUTP) was initiated in 2010 by the Government of India. Supported by state/local governments, the Global Environment Facility, and the World Bank, with a four-year project period, it is expected that the environmental risks caused by rapidly urban transport growth can be reduced. One of the three project components is demonstration projects which focus on public transport development, non-motorized transport development, intelligent transport system, and integrated land use, transport planning and Transit Oriented Development. Until now, there are five cities from different states that are participating as demonstration cities (Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune, Naya Raipur, Indore, and Mysore). The main outcome is that other Indian cities can replicate the sustainable transport solutions demonstrated by the participating cities. A similar project model is also used for SaferBraIn project, where Balancia is involved in it. With Brazil and India as the targeted countries, the project results will be used as the basis for extrapolation of findings and experience in all of the Emerging Economies. More information about SUTP can be found here. |
