Amsterdam Metropolitan Area energy neutral by 2040

| 28.07.2011

Many more governments develop concrete policies on the issues of decarbonisation (CO2 reduction) and energy neutrality. One of them is the Metropoolregio Amsterdam/MRA (in English: Amsterdam Metropolitan Area) that recently launched a study on this topic, carried out by CE Delft. This study shows that the economic ambitions of the MRA (for 2040) can be energy neutrally achieved if starting from now all involved authorities putting efforts together on energy efficiency and renewable energy. The study was undertaken by order of the steering group Sustainability and Climate Proofing of the MRA, as a result of the ambition of the MRA to be an energy neutral region in 2040. It means that the amount of energy used in the region will also be sustainably generated in the same region.

The study indicates five major measures concerning passenger and freight transport, in which each measure is divided into specific actions for the relevant municipalities and other parties. In each measure, a rough estimation of the potential reduction is given in PetaJoules (a large unit of energy which is equivalent to more than 30 million cubic meters of natural gas).
