New BRT database online| 02.05.2012 Approximately 134 cities worldwide have implemented Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems, serving nearly 22 million people daily. BRT has gained in popularity, because there is a growing demand for low-cost, sustainable urban transport in cities. As the number of BRT systems in the world increases, current, accurate and complete information about existing and planned systems becomes increasingly important. A new database on Bus Rapid Transit systems worldwide has been developed and launched by The International Energy Agency (IEA) in partnership with EMBARQ, a division of the think tank World Resources Institute. Since a month, this database is publicly available via the website www.brtdata.org. The goal of IEA and EMARQ is to improve the access to reliable and current data about BRT, to help planners, policy makers and researchers in developing well-functioning BRT systems. The data that can be found in the BRT-database is an essential component in calculating energy efficient scenarios for more sustainable transport. Key indicators are available on the system-level or corridor-level of the BRT systems, and are displayed in a map and clarifying table per region, country or city. To enhance the database and to keep it up-to-date, the site has an open source character. More information on how to use the database can be found here. |
