Non-Motorised Transport Bratislava

Client: Energy Centre Bratislava

Year: 2012

The transport sector is the third largest CO2 emitter in the Slovak Republic with an increasing share in the total of the emissions of greenhouse gases in the country. This share has grown from 8% in the year 1990 to 17% in 2008. In this sector, 98% of all emissions are coming from road transport. To change this trend, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) - as the implementing agency of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) - implements the project of Sustainable Mobility in the City of Bratislava. This project aims to reduce emissions of CO2 from road transport sector in Bratislava.

As part of this project, Balancia played a role as an international non-motorised transport (NMT) expert to undertake a study which aimed to start up a modal shift from car usage to the usage of NMT modes like cycling and walking (as sole transport trips or combined with public transport trips) to reduce the CO2 emissions in Bratislava.

The first mission to Bratislava took place in January 2012 which resulted in an Interim Report delivered in May 2012. This report describes analysis of existing situation, a review on international best practices and possible technical solutions suitable for Bratislava.

The second mission was undertaken in November 2012. During this mission, Balancia gave a presentation to the stakeholders, which mainly contained an NMT infrastructure design guideline and advice on how to implement it to effectively reach the project goal.

The final report was delivered in December 2012 which mainly contains technical and policy strategies and recommendations on implementation phases to increase NMT use in Bratislava in a short period.
